How to Train a Dog to be Well Mannered

How to train a dog to be the well mannered dog that you have always wanted. One of the most important parts of training your dog is to teach your dog what you want them to do. They really have no idea what we want, we need to show them. Then you need to understand how dogs learn. Dogs learn by consequences for example if your dogs sits and you reward the behavior they are more likely to repeat it.

This is the basic foundation of how to train a dog and how a dog learns.
Behaviors that are reinforced increase. Use this to your advantage when training. Remember if you reinforce an unwanted behavior it will also increase.

Your dog will learn if I do
THIS than THAT will happen. Which means your dog will learn when he sits he may get a treat, or his dinner or to go outside. Dogs learn that if they do what we want that something good happens, they earn a reward. The reward does not have to be food it can be anything the dog wants like petting, praise, a walk, a trip in the car, a game of catch, or a walk.

The next step to having a well mannered dog is to teach your dog what
you want. Dogs have no idea of what good human manners are so you must teach them. The way to do this is very easy.  Let me give you some real life examples of how this works.

When your dog comes up to you with a ball in his mouth ask for a sit then play can begin. The leash comes out for a walk, your dogs is jumping and going crazy,
ask for a sit if he doesn't comply put the leash away for a minute and ignore your dog. Then bring the leash back out ask him for a sit again, when he does he may
go for a walk. Your dog races to the door to get outside, the door will not open until your dog sits and waits. Its time for dinner ask your dog to sit then he may
have his food.

It is amazing how easy this principal is and how well mannered your dog will become. They quickly learn that their good behavior will have big payoffs.

As you can see this is not very hard to do but it is important to be
consistent and that everyone in the family must follow the same training rules.

This is a very easy way to train your dog and it can work with your everyday life.
Start training your dog as soon as possible and you will be on your way to having the
well mannered dog that you deserve.
