Dog Supplies for Your New Dog or Puppy

To get ready for your new pet you need to purchase a few dog supplies. One of the first things is a crate. A crate works well to keep your puppy safe when she can’t be supervised.

The Crate

The crate is also a great tool for house training your puppy. Puppies and dogs naturally won’t eliminate where they sleep. With the crate being their bed they won’t go in their bed. This makes it more predicable when your puppy will need to go out.

Pick a crate that is large enough for your puppy to stand, turn around and lay comfortably. If the crate is too large your puppy can pick a spot in the back and eliminate there. If you have a large breed dog and you purchase a crate that will fit the dog when it’s an adult make sure to use a divider or card board box to reduce the size for your puppy. Make sure when your puppy is in the crate to remove the collar so it doesn’t get caught and strangle the dog.

The Collar, Leash, and ID Tags

Next your puppy will need a collar, leash and ID tags. Remember your puppy is growing very rapidly so check the collar often to make sure it’s not too tight.
There a several different collars available so pick what style that you like but just pick one that will be comfortable for your dog.

For leashes I like a 6 foot leather one. They last forever and are easy to hold on to. There are also retractable leashes which many people like to use. I do not like these I feel there is no control and your dog could easily get into a dangerous situation before you could react. Make sure to get an ID tag in case your dog ever got lost.

Food Bowls

For meals you’re going to need a few food bowls. I like the glass bowls for water and the stainless steel for food. Glass bowls don’t tip over so there less risk of spilling.

Dog Toys

Toys and chew toys are important for a new puppy. Toys add enrichment and occupy your puppy so they don’t get into things that they shouldn’t. Chew toys provide a natural outlet for chewing and can keep them busy while in the crate.

Gates

I recommend some gates. Your puppy needs to be supervised for several months one of the best ways to do this is gating your puppy in one or two rooms. If they have free run of the house you can’t see what their getting into and potty accidents are more likely to occur.

These are the recommended supplies you will need to get started with a new puppy or dog.
