Dog Grooming
Dog grooming is important part of the care of your new pet. Grooming keeps your
dogs coat, skin, feet, ears, and teeth healthy.
Grooming your pet regularly you will be familiar with their fur and their body and notice
if there are any problems or changes. Dog grooming can also be enjoyable and
relaxing for both you and your dog.
The Bath
Dogs need to be bathed regularly. On average they will need to be bathed about
every two to four months. Unless their like my dogs and get dirty all the time. I need to
bathe my dogs about every month.
I use my shower in the master bedroom and have a long hose with a sprayer that is
attached to the faucet. This works very well and saves me the expensive of a
groomer. I like to use a dog shampoo that has a conditioner added to it because this
saves the time of an additional step.
Brushing
Your dog will need to be brushed several times a week or more depending on their
coat. Brushing removes dead hair, stimulates the skin, distributes the natural oils on
the coat, it sloughs off dead dry skin and helps you to be familiar with your dogs body.
The only tools you will need are a brush, comb and a detangler if your dog has long
hair.
Cutting the Nails
Nail cutting is probably the most dreaded task in dog grooming. This is why it needs to
be started with your puppy and be a pleasant experience. How to do this is to
gradually get your dog used to the nail clippers.
Start by treating the puppy with lots of yummy treats while slowly just touching the feet
and nails with the clippers but do not cut the nails yet. Do this step for a few days and
only move ahead if your puppy is perfectly relaxed with this.
Then while feeding the treats take the nail clippers and start tapping the nail. Do this
for a few days and when your puppy is calm with this you can move to the next step.
Again while feeding some treats clip only the smallest tip of the nail off on one or two
toes only. You will repeat this for a couple of days making sure your puppy remains
relaxed with this step.
The next step is to add cutting the tip off of two or three nails per foot while feeding
treats. As always you want a calm relaxed puppy for a few days before moving to
another step.
I know this seems like a long process now but believe me it is well worth it. If you do
this right now and take the time with your puppy you will have a dog that will be very
easy to clip its nails as an adult.
The final step in this process is to be able to cut all of your puppy’s nails on each foot.
Once again feed great treats while cutting the tiny tip of each nail. After this cut your
dogs nails every two weeks and continue to make it a positive experience with treats.
The key to successful nail cutting is to always just cut the tiniest tip off so that you don’
t hit the vein. Always keep it positive and bring out your dogs favorite treats for this.
For nail cutting the only equipment you need is to purchase a sharp pair of nail
clippers.
Cleaning the Ears
Don’t forget your dog’s ears. They need to be cleaned about once a week. Use a
cotton ball with ear cleaning solution. Wipe the inside surface of your dog’s ear be
careful and do not go down to far. Never use Q-tips you could be at risk of damaging
the ear canal and cause pain.
Brushing the Teeth
Lastly don’t forget your dog’s teeth. Dogs can have the same dental problems that we
have if their teeth are neglected. You will need a tooth brush or a piece of gauze and
dog tooth paste. Do not use human tooth paste it foams too much and can upset their
stomach.
Your will find your dog will actually like the dog tooth paste because it comes in great
flavors like chicken and beef. Apply a small amount of tooth paste to the brush and
only brush the surface of the teeth. Try to brush your dog’s teeth once a day.
This will really pay off by saving the expensive of cleaning at the vet and it will
eliminate the risk of having your dog anesthetized for the cleaning.
Dog grooming is a great way to keep your dog looking its best along with keeping
them healthy.
