Dog Care for Your New Pet
Congratulations you have made the decision to get a new dog or a puppy. The next step is to prepare for your dog's home coming and to decide on the kind of dog care you will need. The preparation for your new dog will be similar to preparing for a baby.
There will be lots of excitement and things to do surrounding the new addition to your family. Yes, your new dog should be considered as a part of your family. A dog will depend on you for everything in their life. Your new dog should receive the same respect, care and consideration that other family members receive. This is a very exciting time so where do you begin and what do you need?
Puppy or Dog Proof Your House
Before your puppy comes home you will need to puppy proof your house. Dogs love to explore their environment with their mouth. So you need to get down on the floor and look at things from your dog’s perception.
Any small objects need to be removed from the floor. Electrical cords need to be put out of reach from the dog. If you have household plants make sure they are not poisonous. The trash can also be a temptation for dogs so make sure it is in a secure place that is not reachable by the dog. Make sure your dog can not reach any chemicals, cleaning supplies or medication. This will be a good start for getting your house ready for the new dog but always supervise them when they are out and about.
Health
One of the first things you’re going to need to do is take your new pet to the veterinarian. The dog needs to have a complete exam to check their health. It’s important to establish a good relationship with your vet because they can be a great source of information on dog training, boarding facilities and dog care.
Supplies
The next step in your preparation for your new puppy is getting a few new supplies. Your puppy is going to need some essentials which are a crate, leash, collar, bowls, toys and a bed. These are the most important supplies that you will need right from the beginning. Later you may find other things that you may need or want. But this will get you started and help to keep your supply costs down.
Nutrition
A puppy grows at a very fast rate and will need the proper nutrition to grow to be a healthy dog. This can be a very confusing area because of the large selection of different types of food available. This is an area to do some research and to also get a recommendation from your vet.
Grooming
Puppies at some point are going to need grooming. Depending on the type of fur they have they may also need to be clipped. It is very important to get your puppy used to baths, brushing, nail cutting and if needed a haircut at a young age when they are in that important socialization period.
If you miss that socialization window it can be much more difficult to do it when they are older. You could end up with a dog that hates being groomed making it a huge challenge for both you and the dog.
Now that you have puppy proofed your house, seen your vet, had your dog groomed, you have your supplies and your dog is fed it’s time to have a little fun. Play with and enjoy your new companion you both deserve it.
