Choosing a Dog Breeder

Choosing a dog breeder is a very important part of the process of selecting the right dog. A good breeder will treat her dogs like her own children.

The first call to the dog breeder you may find that, the breeder is asking you as many questions as you’re asking them. A great breeder is not going to let her puppies go to any home. She will want to know all about you and your intentions. She will want to make sure that you can provide her puppies with a good, loving home. If you pass the test. Then you will be able to set up an appointment to see the puppies.

When you arrive at the house or kennel it should be very clean and odor free. The puppies you see should be happy, friendly, healthy, active puppies. The breeder will be proud to let you meet the puppies and parents or any other dogs she may have. This will give you an idea of what the puppy’s temperament and appearance may be as an adult dog.

Find out from the breeder what kinds of things she does to socialize the puppies. Young puppies need to begin socialization with the breeder. A good breeder will be doing a lot of handling, exposing the puppies to all the activities of the household, have the puppies meeting many new people then start some crate and potty training.

A responsible breeder will give you a health guarantee. They will have tested the parents for any inherited diseases and possibly have you sign a contract regarding future breeding rights. The breeder should always be willing to take a puppy back in the event that you can’t keep it for some reason.

Your new puppy will be dewormed, vaccinated and will have records showing the dates that these procedures were done. If the puppy has a pedigree the
paperwork should be available when you take your dog home so that you can register her right away.

Most good breeder’s will send you home with some food so that you can slowly switch your puppy over to the new food you’re going to use. Also try to take a favorite toy or blanket home from the breeder so your puppy will have a familiar smell while getting adjusted to their new home.

Last the breeder may send you home with some puppy care articles to help you get started. Then a good breeder will always tell you to call with any questions or concerns and want to hear how puppy is adjusting to their new family. They will love for you send pictures and success stories of your new puppy to past along to other new puppy parents.
