How to Prevent Dog Behavior Problems
Dog behavior problems are one of the biggest reasons for dogs to be relinquished or euthanized to shelters each year. Over two million of these dogs die because of their problems.
A study from University of California Davis has shown that with even one hour of formal training the rate of relinquishment decreases by 20 to 30 percent. This is a powerful message for dog owners.
This means that dog owners need to have training for their dogs. The more training they have, with education on normal dog behavior, and socialization. The better equipped they will be to handle and understand their dogs.
When our pet dogs learn the skills we want, we are happier with our pets and they are at a lower risk to be relinquished to a shelter or euthanized. Then our dogs stay in our home and life's forever.
Most dogs that are in shelters are dogs under the age of 12 months. If a dog can make it to over one year old, they have a better chance of remaining in a home forever.
The UC Davis study states that the highest reason owners give up their dogs are for house soiling, destructiveness, fear, and misinformation or myths regarding dog training. The dog that is at the highest risk for being relinquished are dogs that remain outside 100% of the time.
Outside dogs never are fully socialized, learn house training, are destructive, tend to bark, dig, and escape. These dogs are usually never trained properly and the owner has a harder time bonding with these unruly dogs. This is such a preventable situation.
Don’t get a dog if they are going to be outdoors 100% of the time. You are setting the dog and yourself up for failure and this is not fair to a dog.
A dog is a huge commitment. They are living, breathing animals that deserve the best situation possible. Your are wasting your time and money and possibly the life of a dog if you don’t take this endeavor seriously.
A dog is a great expense in both time and money. They will need the right environment, exercise, training, love, attention and care. But a dog will pay you back with more love, companionship and happiness then you can ever imagine if you take care of them the right way.
There is no reason today not to acquire the right skills you need to properly take care of a dog and prevent many of the behavior problems that cause relinquishment.
There are many sources available to dog owners to get the right education, training and skills you will need to have a great life for your dog and you. One of the best places to start is with the help of your veterinarian and a positive trainer from The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) or a Certified Professional Dog Trainer from the CCPDT.
