Dog Adoption Saves A Life

Dog adoption saves a life and helps to reduce the number of homeless pets in
shelters. Over 6-8 million dogs may enter shelters or breed rescue groups each year
but there are only enough homes for about half of these. The dogs that do not get
adopted are unfortunately euthanized.
Dog adoption can save a life and helps with
the pet overpopulation problem.

Shelters receive dogs that are lost or that are no longer wanted by their family. The
shelter then houses and cares for these dogs temporarily trying to find them new
homes. Prospective family will be screened so that they understand the
commitment
and
responsibility of owning a dog. The last thing the shelter wants is for a dog to be
returned because a family didn’t understand what was involved with having a dog.

The shelter tries to
match families with the right dog for their lifestyle. Many of the
dogs that come into a shelter will be temperament tested. The temperament testing
helps with determining the type of home that would be best for the dog. Qualities like
is the dog good with children or other dogs will be noted. The shelter will try to get a
good history and background on dogs that have been relinquished to help in the
matching process.

Many of the dogs at shelters are
purebred dogs and are under the age of 18 months.
This is a very
economical way to get a purebred dog. A purebred dog from a breeder
can typically cost from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The adoption fees vary by
shelter but will be much less than what a breeder would charge. Plus the shelter dog
usually will come with all of the vaccinations and already is spayed or neutered. This
also
saves the owner hundreds of dollars.

Shelters are non-profit agencies that may be run by the local government or may be
supported by private donations. Shelters depend on
volunteers and donations to
care for the large number of homeless animals that are relinquished or lost each year.
Never purchase a dog from a pet store. These dogs are
puppy mill dogs and
contribute to the millions of dogs that end up in shelters every year. Remember dog
adoption saves a life.
